Remote resolution

The faults that never needed a van, and what it takes to close them from a distance.

QUICK ANSWER. Remote resolution is closing a machine fault without sending a technician to site. It covers remote resets, setting changes, and guiding someone at the customer’s premises through a simple fix. It is measured as a share of total faults, and it is the cheapest form of service an operator has.

What counts as remote resolution?

Anything that returns the machine to service without a van. In practice that means three categories:

  • A remote action. A reset or a parameter change performed from the operator’s system.
  • A guided fix. Talking the person at the site through refilling, unblocking or restarting.
  • A correct non-dispatch. Recognising that the machine is not actually broken, and saying so.

The third category is easy to overlook and often the most valuable. A call that ends without a job is a job that never entered the queue.

How does remote resolution work in practice?

  1. The fault becomes visible before, or as, the customer notices it.
  2. The fault is classified. Some error codes are known to be resolvable without hands.
  3. A remote action is attempted, or the site is guided through one.
  4. The outcome is logged against the machine, so the pattern improves next time.
  5. If it fails, dispatch proceeds with better information than it would otherwise have had.

Step five matters. Remote resolution is not a replacement for field service. It is a filter placed in front of it.

Why it matters for a coffee service operator

Because it removes cost without removing service quality. The customer gets a working machine faster, and the operator avoids the travel entirely.

The share is larger than most operators expect. Public figures from connected fleets indicate that more than 25% of downtime can be resolved without a technician once the fault is visible remotely. That is roughly a quarter of the dispatch queue.

At the scale of Europe’s installed base, around 4.5 million machines according to the European Vending & Coffee Service Association, the arithmetic is straightforward. Visibility is the precondition. A fault nobody can see cannot be resolved remotely.
